Kings of Leon have been on such a roll since the release of the highly successful album 'Only by the Night' two years ago that it seemed nothing could stop them.

That was until they were forced to end a concert after only three songs in the US city of St Louis in the weekend, due to pigeons defecating on them.

Playing at the First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre the band who are famous for such hits as 'Sex on Fire', 'Use Somebody' and 'Revelry' were getting hit themselves from above during the shortened performance.

"The band is very sad and upset about it," Kings of Leon publicist Ken Weinstein said on Sunday.

"No band would play under those conditions," he said.

Weinstein said Kings of Leon were warned by management of a pigeon infestation in the rafters of the amphitheater. While the two bands that opened for them left the stage "riddled" with excrement, Weinstein said.

"They had to make a game-time decision," Weinstein said, and elected to play.

Weinstein said it wasn't until after the third song when bassist Jared Followill was hit for the third or fourth time that the band called it quits.

According to reports an unruly crowd, who weren't aware of why the band left the stage, chanted 'refund' when they realised they weren't coming back.

Kings drummer Nate Followill confirmed the events on Twitter saying: "So sorry St. Louis. We had to bail, pigeons (expletive) in jareds mouth. Too unsanitary to continue".
