A lot of people think that - in making the series it is all parties and high living all across the globe. They tend to forget about the stress, mental exhaustion and bouts of runny poo that are very omnipresent during the entire time. We actually spent more time in airports and planes than we did in one single country. And as you can imagine - that can get a bit too much.
During the course of the series we caught more than 30 flights. And more than a handful of our favorite mishaps occurred at airports. There was the time when I left one of my carry-on bags with all my important work-related things at Narita airport in Tokyo, only to wake up landing in London thinking - Shit!
Or the time when we nearly didn't make it out of Ghana because Dean the Producer got detained by a crazy Togolese Hotelier. Three of us got out but Dean didn't. So we had to wait for him and get a new flight out of Ghana the next day. We still don't know what happened to him there but we don't talk about it, because every time someone mentions 'Cedi' he starts to sob uncontrollably.
And of course, there was the time when I nearly didn't get let on a flight because I got mad at the stupid Miami security woman who confiscated my big jar of 'gooey gooey Dulche De Leche' I'd brought from Argentina. For the record - Miami Airport is the most stressful airport in the world.I think next time we might actually make a TV series about trying to smoothly negotiate in airports in order make a TV series and call it 'Making Planes'. Anyways, here's a little airport moment - this definitely is one of the happier times.
