We have definitely been very lucky with our cover version artists in the second season of the series. Once the countries were locked in I would stay up late every night listening to a ton of music from each country. And I would draw up a 'dream list' of everyone that I would like to get as our master bands. And we'd been able to get the band at the top of that list nearly in every country. Luckily everyone loved the idea of the show. Considering the busy schedules of some of the artists it was an honour to have them on board. That's nowhere better displayed than in the Parisian episode.
Amadou and Mariam are literally two of the biggest stars in French speaking music. They are originally from Mali and they are both blind. They met and fell in love while staying at the Blind Institute in Bamako. And they have been happily married for over 30 years. They have become a hit all over the world in the last decade, playing at some of the biggest festivals. From playing at Barack Obama's inauguration and supporting Blur at their Hyde Park Reunion to being the headline act at the Fifa World Cup in South Africa - they've gone onto become two of the highest selling artists in the French speaking world. Their music is incredible.
The song 'Sabali' went onto to be No15 on Pitchfork’s Best Songs of 2008. And anyone who is familiar with the Chicago based Blog will know that means something. We were lucky to catch Amadou and Mariam within this one-week window where they had a break from touring back in Paris. They immediately loved Fat Freddys Drop's 'Hope'. The version that they have produced was stunning. While shooting the video in the back garden of their record company in Paris that afternoon, I had to pinch myself. I'm a huge fan of them, and even now I can't believe that we managed to have them on the show.
