Okay, Miley - we get it, you're all grown up

Miley Cyrus has released another sexually-charged music video, drawing the usual criticism from outraged parents of her young, impressionable fan base.

This week the former 'Hannah Montana' star released a video for her latest single, 'Who Owns My Heart', in which she is seen writhing on a bed before dressing up in a skimpy outfit and dancing in a nightclub.

US lobby group the Parents Television Council has already spoken out against the video in the following statement:

"It is unfortunate that she would participate in such a sexualized video like this one. It sends messages to her fan base that are diametrically opposed to everything she has done up to this point. Miley built her fame and fortune entirely on the backs of young girls, and it saddens us that she seems so eager to distance herself from that fan base so rapidly."

(Amusingly, as Yahoo! Music blogger Chris Willman points out, Miley's father Billy Ray Cyrus sits on the board of that very organisation. Wonder if he'll be so kind as to clarify his position on the subject?)

Earlier this year Cyrus released a similarly risque video for her song 'Can't Be Tamed'. Back then she hit back at critics by suggesting her bosom-boosting corset and lack of pants were necessary for artistic reasons:

"The video isn't about being sexy or about who can wear less clothes. It's about explaining the song and living the lyrics."

I totally get that Miley Cyrus is keen to shed her goody-two-shoes Disney image. It would suck to be forever thought of as Hannah Montana. But going from wholesome to hotpants in less than a year is probably a bit much for her public to digest. After all, she's 17 going on 18 - what the hell is she doing acting like she spends her evenings out clubbing? (Remember, the legal age for drinking - and therefore clubbing - in the US is 21.)

Here's the video - see what you think of it:

So - was it any worse than her previous stunts? (Remember when she pole-danced on top of an icecream van?)

Personally I find Miley's lack of talent more offensive than the way she is dressed or the way she moves.

Her drawling, nasal voice is autotuned as she sings some frankly clumsy lyrics ('Creation shows me what to do'? What does that even mean? Oh, and FYI: 'wave' and 'blame' don't rhyme).

Dressed in a ripoff of Kylie Minogue's gold 'Spinning Around' outfit, she unleashes a set of jerky 'dance' moves that are frankly uninspiring and about as far from sexy as you can get.

Pop music has plenty of original, talented performers right now. There's no excuse for listening to tired and derivative stuff like this.

The best thing Miley Cyrus could do is to spend a year or two growing up before re-launching herself as a self-assured young adult. Because right now, as an awkwardly precocious teen singing 'Come on baby / Keep provoking me, keep on roping me', she's making everyone cringe.
