Cape Fear
Capes fly, faces contort and there's dry ice aplenty in this week's episode of Dancing With The Stars.

We are down to six performers and last night's installment whittled the remaining talent down to just five. So who do you think will be in the final? I think it's clear that it's going to come down to a battle of the ‘ama's' (as I like to call them), Miriama and Temepara.

These two have charmed the nation with their natural dance aptitude and have the country eating out of their jazz hands. In fact I'm planning on popping down to the TAB at lunch and see if I can place a $1 each way on both of them. I'm THAT confident. Come, take my hand and let me lead you down the winding path that is Dancing with the Stars episode 4................

Jonny and Miriama tug at viewers heartstrings with a video intro of them visiting Miriama's old primary school to distribute raincoats to kids in need in aid of their charity KidsCan. How can you not love these two? Awww.

The dance begins with Miriama and Jonny rising from amidst a sea of dry ice for their rendition of the Paso Doble. Miriama is bewitching in her navel-exposing gown and ‘Bride of Frankenstein' hair and make-up.

There is much bat-like twirling to the piercing strains of a hideous version of the goth-lite song "Bring Me Back To Life" by those cranky youths Evanescence. They even pull out that classic move from childhood ‘wash the dishes, dry the dishes', perhaps a trick they picked up during their visit to Miriama's alma mater?

This all seems vaguely familiar and then I realise that Jonny must have drawn inspiration from the great and epic music videos of Meatloaf and Bonnie Tyler, filled with drama, passion, and yards and yards of velveteen. Their performance strikes a chord with Brendan due to its creativity, and Craig also admires the dance because it's ‘arty'. When will Meatloaf and Bonnie be recognised for their creative genius I ask?

Ballroom is clearly Cory's comfort zone and he and Rebecca make a handsome pair as they take to the dance floor to the soothing strains of "My Guy" for the foxtrot. Cory reveals in their intro video that they've been watching a lot of Fred Astaire for inspiration, as they couldn't find any Gene Kelly films to watch.

It looks like Fred has served them well though as they effortlessly glide across the dancefloor, and these two could charm the remaining arm off a one armed man. Cory expertly spins Rebecca on his shoulder for the finale, which fails to impress Brendan who feels that it is a ‘ridiculous' addition to a foxtrot. Give them a break Brendan; they want to bust out the crowd pleasing gymnastics that the others are so fond of too!! All the judges agree that it's a vast improvement on last week and ballroom is where Cory really shines.

Tina and Aaron are up next for the Paso Doble. Their costumes look very reminiscent of Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome, with Tina cast in the role of Aunty Entity (as originally portrayed by another famous Tina).

Tina inflates her face in a superb impression of an angry puffer fish, her face defiant and proud, ready to shoot poisonous quills at her prey. The judges agree the choreography is great, although Brendan says Tina needs to soften her face. Aaron shockingly leaps on the microphone and whole-heartedly agrees saying "yes, I've been telling her that". Oh Aaron no! Such bad form to agree with the judges when they are criticising your partner, don't you think? Comments aside, they get a great score of 34.

Monty and Nerida are up next for the foxtrot. It's a traditional, conservative dance and they are suitably and handsomely dressed to match. Monty's face appears to have been cryogenically frozen in an unfortunate open mouthed expression. They finish with an over-the-head spin, but we knew they would, because it's what they do. And we love them for it.

Alison says "I actually quite liked it". Alison has a particular skill at giving compliments which sound more like insults. Craig is somewhat critical of Monty's dance style and Nerida leaps to his defence. Ooh good on you Nerida, don't let those judges maul your young charge on your watch. Monty admits he is finding dancing harder than boxing or league.

Ooh it's all so close!

Martin and Lauren take a turn next for the Paso Doble. Jason predicts that Martin will be the dark horse of the competition. Or will he be the old nag destined for the glue factory as Yahoo!Xtra pollsters seem to think? Martin had 40% of the vote last week in our poll as to who should go home next.

Martin and Lauren simultaneously twirl capes to Abba's "Gimme Gimme Gimme". This should be good; it has all the elements of a great dance, tacky music and wacky costumes. Gimme more! Martin tries to recycle his tango face from last week but now looks more like a perturbed monk.

I had such high hopes for this dance, but there's really not a lot of dancing happening. The judges too are disappointed after Martin and Lauren's great showing last week. They all agree that the dance is laboured and stompy and that there's too much walking and not enough dancing. However they are all rapturous about their use of ‘knee walks'.

Jason is enamoured of Martin's cape and requests a demonstration. Martin twirls his cape with such force he knocks the microphone right out of Jason's hand. They get a sad score of 18. I think it's time for you to go, Martin and Lauren.

Temepara and Stefano are the final dancers of the evening with the Foxtrot. They put on an elegant, cheeky performance with gorgeous choreography. The oldies in the crowd are in raptures at their smooth moves. Craig finds it absolutely charming and the best foxtrot of the evening. All the judges love it and Alison describes Temepara as a ‘porous talent, absorbing everything Stefano is telling you' They tie with Tina and Aaron on a score of 34.

It's time for the scores to be tabulated and we are forced to sit through a butchering of the Kiwi classic ‘Hine E Hine' by Will Martin as we anxiously await the outcome. I have no nails left to bite and am eyeing up the claws of my very nervous looking dog.

It‘s Monty and Martin in the final two, but by now we know it's a foregone conclusion that Martin and Lauren will be dancing off the stage tonight. They give us a final flourish of their magnificent capes as we farewell them, leaving us to ponder who will be next to hang up their dancing shoes.

Think the judges should give constructive criticism no need to be insulting. It's for fun after all isn't it?
