Oscars '09: On the red carpet
Want to find out about the pick of the red carpet? Check out our arrivals blog as the 81st Academy Awards get underway.

Righto, movie lovers! This is the afternoon you've been waiting for if you're at all partial to frocks, shocks, and a suitably impressive array of stars. We'll be taking you through the highs and lows of the red carpet as the celebs arrive, and a blow by blow as the ceremony plays out.

Will Angelina and Jennifer come face to face? Will Kate Winslet finally take home a little gold man? Will any part of Mickey Rourke's face fall off? Keep it here to find out!

It's a rather sunny evening in Los Angeles, and the stands flanking the Kodak Theatre's red carpet is packed out.

The powers that be have played their cards rather close to their chest this year and haven't released the names of celebs who'll be presenting awards this year - so there'll be a few surprises when it comes to seeing just who's walking down the red carpet. It's their tactic to lure voters in to the ceremony.

We know the Aniston will be there, and Sarah Jessica Parker, Julia Roberts and Daniel Craig are hotly rumoured to have presenting duties too.

I can't wait to see Robert Downey Jr. on the carpet. Love how he wore sneakers with his suit to the Globes. Love how he adores that wife of his. And although Heath Ledger is a virtual lock-in for Best Supporting Actor, how cool would it be if Tropic Thunder produced an Academy-Award winning performance?

First up! It's one of the youngest celebs, Miley Cyrus preening and posing on the red carpet. Her dress is cute! Sequined and shiny, a bit of white, a bit of silver, with a full skirt to the ground - some light layering, sort of like petals, and a cinched waist. It's sort of Reese Witherspoon-esque the year she won for Walk The Line in vintage Chanel.

But it's not Chanel, it's Zuhair Murad.

I like the hair too, it's fresh and age appropriate. I mean, she looks 16, not 40. Ali Lohan, take note.

Miley meets Ryan, and informs him that she suspects the dress "weighs more than me."

There's mama Tish Cyrus lurking in the background. She's Miley's official date. Ryan pries as to the whereabouts of her older boyfriend, but no dice.

Emile Hirsch from Milk pops up, suited and booted in black. And Dominic Cooper from Mamma Mia, who is supposedly doing a musical number. Tells Ryan he's nervous. Ryan's advice? "It's Hollywood." Don't suspect that's very helpful.

Ah! Dev Patel from Slumdog Millionaire's just arrived to big cheers. Bless! Can't wait to see the little Slumdog kids on the red carpet, they've been flown over from Mumbai especially.

Here's Zac Efron! Are people arriving in ascending order of age? Oh no, Anthony Hopkins is here. He looks smart in a tuxedo, but I doubt his hair could move. He's gone heavy on the product - but hey, it's the Oscars! Not a time to go half-arsed with the preening.

Vanessa Hudgens in black Marchesa, a strapless job with a flowing train. Very pretty. Seacrest asks why she's not working the carpet in tandem with boyfriend Zac. They're not Siamese twins, Ryan.

Here's Doubt's Amy Adams in a gorgeous, rich red and an amazing necklace - kind of sixties. She seems to stick to tones of maroon, purple and red.

Here are the Slumdog kids all glammed up. Squee! Bless them, they're adorable! Ryan assumes six year olds know English. One does. God love him! He says he feels ‘unbelievable' and graciously takes a compliment about his little tuxedo. As does the young girl in a gorgeous ice blue dress.

The grown up Slumdog star, Frieda Pinto, has arrived and is working the carpet with co-star Dev Patel. She's wearing a flowing, boldly blue, (beautiful on her) full length gown with one sleeve. The sleeve's see-through and embroidered, very elaborate. Lots of material. She's absolutely gorgeous. It's Galliano, and a bold choice. She's wearing 150-year-old jewellery. Now that's vintage.

Ryan says they've got ‘undeniable chemistry,' gets a polite beat-down from Dev. He's articulate and composed, even though he's only 18! They're asked if they're a couple, they avoided the question and started grinning, the pair of them!

Cue Taraji P. Henson, nominated for Supporting Actress for Benjamin Button, in a pale, ruffled pale pink gown with a train. I love it! Plenty of drama, a long-ish train, it looks so beautiful on her skin. My favourite so far, but it's early days. ANTM's Jay Manuel loves it too! "A beautiful rose petal," says he. She's also rocking an amazing necklace, and some great eye makeup.

She's keeping it organic, she tells Ryan, and hasn't prepared a speech. Then horror of horrors! She bends down to show Ryan something on her ankle, accidentally revealing a Spanx-covered thigh. She looks amazing though, so we can forgive her flashing her body-shaping underwear on live TV.

Doubt's Viola Davis is wearing a gold halter neck with a kind of 50s vibe. Like an old school pinup. Very luxurious looking. It's Reem Acra. She's with Ryan and a dapper looking husband. Hubby looks so proud! She tells Ryan she was nervous about acting with the ‘500-pound gorilla of acting, Meryl Streep.' Seems she fared just fine, since she's nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

Nominee Josh Brolin and wife Diane Lane have just arrived, she's demure in black, elegant but not outshining her nominated husband. Now that's teamwork! I've never fancied Josh Brolin before, but he looks good! And very well spoken, which is always a bonus with actors.

Heidi Klum's rather covered up in red, a long gown with a dramatic slanted neckline. It's folded, and sort of geometric, in a va-va-voom red. Beautiful red heels, I covet! Her hair's pretty simple, but it suits her. Seal's there with her, and he looks great. They're such a striking couple.

Heidi reveals to Ryan that it's a difficult dress to wear, and that she ‘had to sit on one butt cheek' all the way on the car ride here.

Twilight's Robert Pattinson has arrived, cueing squeals from some in the Y!X office. Not me. I have so far resisted his allure, but his hair won't disappoint.

Marisa Tomei's in one-shouldered white, Amanda Seyfried from Mamma Mia (rumoured to be performing) is in red too, and Natalie Portman's in mauve with a strapless sweetheart neckline.

Sarah Jessica Parker's in sculptured, shiny gold. Oh, she says the colour is ‘barely mint.' My bad! It's Dior haute couture with a tulle, princess-like skirt. The neckline gives her some impressive cleavage. She keeps correcting everything the hubby says, which he accepts meekly.

There's Robert Downey, yay! Clean shaven, looking gorgeous! Sharp in black. And James Franco! The Y!X girls love him.

Here's Anne Hathaway! Her hair's in a regal-looking up-do, her dress is a glittering shade of ice-white, with a touch of champagne. It's jeweled. Wow. The bottom is AMAZING. Part-scaled, part-sequinned. It's elaborate, it's dramatic, and it definitely makes you look. She looks like a winner!

Seth Rogen's here with a tiny slip of a girlfriend. He looks so thin, his entire face shape has changed. He's lost tons of weight for a movie role, but tells Ryan "I don't know if I'll keep it."

"Skinny people can be cranky," Seacrest helpfully points out.

Sean Penn's here with wife Robin. They both look great, clad all in black - he's in black shirt, black suit, black tie.

Here comes Sophia Loren! And her amazing cleavage. Can you believe she's in her seventies?

Beyonce's dress shows off her rocking figure, she looks tall and statuesque, like a vase. I'm not sure I like the fabric, black with shiny gold embroidery bits. I'm not sold. I like her slicked back hair though.

Mickey Rourke's here and, naturally, not afraid to be different in a white Jean-Paul Gaultier suit. He's wearing a pic of his dog Loki around his neck, who died last week. Bless! Got to love a guy that loves his dog.

He says if pal Sean Penn wins he's going to ‘clap his ass off.' How gracious!

Last year's Best Actress winner Marion Cotillard's just arrived. Does this girl ever put a foot wrong, fashion wise? So chic, and I'm not just saying that because she's French.

And here's Penelope Cruz, with a heavy fringe, beautiful eye makeup, some glittering diamonds round the neck. Her dress is very much the style she favours - elaborate, textured and off-white with a full, flowing train. Beautiful. Like a work of art, very detailed.

Kate Winslet! In elegant gun-metal grey and black. I like Kate's hair. The good thing about Ms Winslet is that no matter how much she dresses up, she still looks like her. Just a v. glam version. One shouldered, with some delicate black down one side. It's hard to explain, but it's very unique.

Despite her multiple nominations, Kate says she's ‘extremely nervous' but she's very composed, and her earrings are to die for.

Brad and Angie have turned up! I have not screamed, nor was I inclined to, although they did on TV. Hmmm, she looks beautiful, as always, but she's wearing it black, strapless and baggy. Her hair's nice, half up, long with some eye-catching green earrings - but black and baggy? No doubt she'll start some more pregnancy rumours.

They talk to Ryan Seacrest this time, although briefly, and only Brad.

Philip Seymour Hoffman's here, and I'm wondering what on earth he's wearing on his head. Is it a stocking? Does he plan to loot some Oscar statues if he doesn't win in a legitimate fashion?

And that's it! The eagle has landed, so to speak, and the stars are heading indoors. We'll bring you all the action from the ceremony soon.
