Our screens are positively saturated with reality TV, but we just can't seem to get enough of it!! Last week marked the debut of two new reality shows from two internationally loathed names, Dina Lohan and Denise Richards.
Living Lohan follows 'momager' Dina Lohan in her attempts to turn her daughter Aliana, and to a lesser extent, her young son Cody into superstars. We don't actually get to see Lindsay in the show but we do get to see how much time Dina spends attending to her golden goose.
There are gossip items to be disputed and paparazzi to be reprimanded, all whilst grooming her youngest children to take their place in her fame flock, as their older sister rapidly turns into the bad egg of the family. Someone's gotta pay for Momma's spray on tan!!
Ali is in the midst of recording her second album and is unhappy with some of the songs provided by the record label. (If you're wondering what happened to her first recording, it was a Christmas album with the festive title "Lohan Holiday". And Dina sings on it. Guess what I'm asking for this Christmas!).
Dina brings in Jeremy, a music producer who seems to have pestered his way into the Lohan's lives via the internet, and is now unleashing his 80s synth-driven pop upon the family. Alexis, the personal assistant-cum-nanny to the Lohan clan, reminisces fondly about days of yore when Lindsay was choosing songs for her album. Red alert - history repeating!!
Forget 'Save Britney', its Ali that needs your help now!!
A story comes out in the papers quoting Jeremy as saying he is dating Lindsay despite the fact they've never met. Ali is furious and confronts Jeremy. Just as he is about to tell his side of the story the screen goes black and the title ‘to be continued' pops up. What?? They've sucked me into their boring lives with a cliffhanger ending!! Kudos to you Lohans, you've got me hooked with your desperate grubbing for fame.
Denise Richards and her spawn star in Denise Richards: It's Complicated, the reality show she had to drag through the courts to get produced. Denise lives in a house with an exterior that looks suspiciously like that of the Kardashians (another reality fave!). I have to wonder if these reality stars truly reside in these houses or if the network provides their lodgings. Case in point, Snoop Dogg's Fatherhood. Snoop, I watch Cribs, I know that's not your real house!!
Denise tries her best to convince her audience she is not a husband stealer, she says that she and Heather Locklear had not been friends for several months before she started dating Richie Sambora. However, Denise does not elaborate on the reasons why her friendship with Heather faltered. Hmmm, very suspicious.
After Denise does a few expletive-laced interviews, her dad, who seems like a genuine good sort. tells her she has to donate a pair of her designer shoes to goodwill everytime she swears. At the close of the programme we see a large number of very expensive shoes tossed into plastic bins at the local Salvation Army. It even made this confirmed jandal fan wince a little to imagine those unworn Prada pumps being scooped up for a pittance.
From the first episode it seems that Denise's intention is to show the world she is not the horrible person her ex-husband has portrayed her as. However, this may backfire on her judging by initial reviews of the show out of America which have been mostly unsympathetic. Don't worry Denise, I for one will solider on with your train wreck of a show to see whether your ex-husband's claims that you are ‘greedy, vain and exploitative' are truly justified. Let's hope so!!
The Hills are alive............with the sound of whinging. The Hills seems to be endlessly on our screens, it's on C4 and MTV so your chances of catching it are better than the flu. The Hills is a great example of why semi-reality (yeah we know it's scripted) TV is so popular these days. The fascination lies in the mundanity of it all.
It's not the outlandish stuff of soap operas, its boring day to day tales of failing friendships and boyfriend stealing. And hating Spencer of course (who, incidentally announced without a trace of irony in his voice on the David Letterman show last week that he charges $100K for night club appearances). And if you're a fan of The Hills you should definitely check out Over The Hills, which is scenes from the show re-enacted by old age pensioners. The pensioner version of Spencer is certainly more appealing than the real deal!
