Friday saw the return of the best competitive reality show EVER, Project Runway! PR takes all the greatest elements of your favourite shows - the edge of your seat nerves of The Amazing Race, the wacky challenges of Fear Factor (minus the Madagascar hissing cockroaches) and the comic bitchiness of America's Next Top Model and rolls them all into one fashion-themed ball of deliciousness.
We first meet the contestants and there are a few wacky characters amongst the group as always. We have hippie-chick Elisa, self-named designers Sweet P and Kit Pistol, and my new fave, the adorably smart-mouthed pixie Christian who looks like Edward Scissorhands is his personal barber.
After checking into their flash new digs the would-be designers head over to Bryant Park (home of Fashion Week) to meet Tim ‘Make It Work' Gunn and Heidi ‘You Are Out - Auf Wiedersehn' Klum and find out what their first assignment will be.
Their first challenge is to design a garment that expresses who you are. Judging by the resulting fashions it would appear that among the designers we have an air hostess, a bag lady, a serpent and a prostitute.
Anyhoo, the designers must first race to a set of fabric filled tents and hustle and fight to get their pick of the fabrics. Elisa gets to work vigorously rubbing her chosen chiffon into the grass so that she can ‘infuse it with nature'. And presumably dog urine. Everyone sprints back to the studio and starts cutting and pinning on their mannequins. Except for earth mother Elisa (or ‘Rain Goddess Woman' as Christian calls her) who leisurely cuts and pins her garment on herself.
The designers work into the night to meet their 1am deadline. Except for Elisa, again, who tacks a big wad of material, rather like a multi-coloured dreadlock on to the back of her dress (which Heidi will later describe as ‘looking like the dress is pooing fabric'), declares herself finished and goes to have a lie down.
The next day is judging and the panel seem decidedly underwhelmed by the offerings. Rami is ultimately declared the winner and Simone is sent packing for the crime of boring judges Nina Garcia and Michael Kors.
We get a sneak peek at future episodes which look delightfully scandalous and gossip laden. Upcoming challenges include resizing an item for the wardrobe of a former fatty, making a prom dress and designing clothes for Sarah Jessica Parkers fashion line! I'll be watching, will you?
