The smut: Weekend edition
Emma Watson, girl wizard and ultimate celebrity role model? Read on.
In a world riddled with Paris Hiltons and Lindsay Lohans, is Emma Watson the ultimate role model for girls?

She's 19. Undeniably gorgeous. She's got an effortless style, and is being hailed as a burgeoning fashionista - appearing in ads for Burberry clothing, Chanel perfume, and loved by Karl Lagerfeld.

As Heidi Klum can attest to, that's no mean feat.

No only was she an A-student throughout high school, she's been accepted to an Ivy League college in the US where she plans to tackle an arts degree. And she's starred in five of the highest grossing films of all time - reportedly earning her more than ten million pounds (roughly NZ$30m), which she gained access to when she turned 18 last year.

Not bad for someone not even out of their teens. She could make anyone feel like an underachiever, no?

The sixth movie in the Harry Potter franchise, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, is released around the world on July 15th. The movie had its New York City premiere on Thursday and while in town Watson, who plays Harry's bookish pal Hermione Granger, appeared on the David Letterman show to promote the movie.

After a slow start on the books quite a few years ago I am an unashamed Harry Potter fan, and will totally be going to see the movie next weekend with a big bucket of popcorn.

She is gorgeous on Letterman. Gorgeous! And I love the dress she's wearing.

Letterman didn't waste much time with Emma, pulling out a photo of the rain-soaked British premiere where the actress' vintage Ossie Clark dress had gaped open in the wind, revealing a flash of her nude coloured knickers.

Smart as a whip, Emma didn't miss a beat when presented with the picture.

"This was a small wardrobe malfunction that happens. I don't actually remember it happening. At least I was wearing underwear!"

Touche, my dear. Touche. Paris and Lindsay, take note. Although it's like comparing chalk and cheese, right?

She told Letterman that although she considers herself an actor first and foremost, she'll be taking on either an English or art degree at a US university where she plans to register under her middle name, Charlotte, to avoid any of the hassles her fame could bring. She decided against attending a British university for that reason.

When Letterman quizzed her on the ins and outs of a liberal arts degree in the US, she shot back "do you live in the States?"

She sassed him! And I suspect he quite enjoyed it. It's so nice to see an actress with a bit of spark about her. She's not trying to have guys fancy her, but they do. She's not falling out of nightclubs, sporting bad fake tan, or making out with her girlfriends to make headlines.

"‘I didn't come from a background of films," she told the UK Daily Mail in an interview earlier this year. "I didn't even really ever watch films. The fact is, my parents weren't into that stuff, and neither was I.'"

The actress has reportedly put her Potter earnings to good use, purchasing a GBP3m townhouse in north London close to her father's place.

Smart, gorgeous, modest, talented, and with her head screwed on the right way?

The world is Emma Watson's oyster.

Jim Carrey: one funny grandpa

One baby better prepare to be entertained in the New Year.

The news broke yesterday that Jim Carrey is going to be a grandfather in early 2010 with daughter Jane, 21, announcing her pregnancy to new fiancé, musician Alex Santana.

Jane is Carrey's daughter from his first marriage to Melissa Womer.
Understandably, the 47-year-old grandfather to be is bursting with pride. "I am very excited," the comedian said in a statement. "Jane is going to be a great mom."
Imagine life with Jim Carrey as your grandfather. The voices! The comedy movements! The rubber faced hilarity! You'd never be bored. Ace Ventura would be great entertainment for kids, although possibly not Count Olaf from Lemony Snicket's, the Grinch or the guy fromThe Mask.

Britney lets her Star of David shine

Britney Spears has been snapped with a Star of David pendant around her neck while out with her two sons in Paris this week, prompting speculation that she may convert to Judaism, the religion of her agent-boyfriend Jason Trawick.

Britney, 27, is no stranger to the smorgasbord approach to world religion. Raised a Baptist in Louisiana, she was recruited into the ways of the Kabbalah by pal Madonna in 2003 before packing that in upon entering motherhood with son Sean Preston in 2005. In 2006 the star was spotted praying at a Hindu temple in Los Angeles. When the star was dating Afghan-born paparazzo Adnan Ghalib a couple of years ago she was even rumoured to be converting to Islam, a story which never proved true.

Maybe Britney's just hedging her bets? She wouldn't be the first when it comes to religion. But the star is as yet to fall for the lures of Scientology.

Britney's tour heads to Denmark tonight before dates in Stockholm, Helsinki and St Petersburg later in the week.

It means she is definitely going to the first screening of the movie, and wouldn't want to miss it.....

Calling Emma Watson a 'role model' is the kiss of death ... Britney, Lindsay and all the others were also burdened with the title of 'role model' in the beginning. At some point every girl grows up and inevitably makes 'mistakes'.

I could so totally tell you, but you know.

Being called a role model is not the kiss of death if you deserve it and are not a complete moron to begin with, ie American.

Being labeled a role model is not the kiss of death, unless you never deseved the title in the first place. Besides she is British, not American, she should be fine as long as she doesn't go native

Enough with the American good girl gone bad scenario - uhm, Kate Moss anyone - Americans are not all the stereotype.
